A Data Scientist Mapped the Ultimate Road Trip...
At just 9.33 days of consistent driving, Randy Olsen, a self-proclaimed "data tinkerer," has designed a route for the quickest way to hit all 48 states in the continental US.
With 50 stops and 2,500 possible routes, Olson used an algorithm he used previously to decipher a search pattern for Where's Waldo. The algorithm runs through various solutions, optimizes and compares them until the best one reveals itself.
There were 3 rules when determining the route:
- Must make at least one stop in all 48 continuous states.
- Exclusive stops at National Natural Landmarks, National Historic Sites, National Parks, or National Monuments
- Must be taken by car and never leave the United States
A visualization of the process with a similar routing problem is shown here:
The result is pictured here, which includes landmarks such the Grand Canyon, the Alamo, Mount Vernon, Graceland, the White House, the Statue of Liberty, and 44 others.
Without slumber or traffic, the route would take you roughly 9.33 days of nonstop driving, but naturally, that's just not realistic. So, if you'd like to take on this epic journey, you should plan a good 6-12 weeks.

BONUS: The Most Optimal National Park Road Trip...
Hit All 47 National Parks in One Trip!
In addition to the landmark map above, Olson put together the most optimal route for visiting all 47 national parks in the 48 contiguous states.
Total, the route spans 14,498 miles.
With the circular path, route planners have the flexibility to hop on and off at any point.
